As a Computer Science and Mathematics double major and in her senior year at the University of Maryland, College Park, Katherine Zen has her hands full juggling the many demands of academic life during the school year. As a DSFederal intern working on the Salesforce, Tableau, and Standardized Data Element Repository (SDER) Library projects, Zen is gaining valuable expertise and enriching her college studies with real-life experience.
Zen’s work at DSFederal has entailed being given a data model of the ER Diagram of the BD Resource Library and tasked to create a wireframe and to develop an initial design. She has also created sample visualizations of the BD Resource Library using Tableau.
Of the project, she said, “I joined the SDER Library Project last month. At first, my main purpose was to understand it. Now I also provide operations support by monitoring email communication and will possibly enhance or add a new feature to the application in the future.”
Assistant VP of IT Services, Prakash Thiagarajan, who serves as Zen’s supervisor, had this to say about his brilliant intern: “Katherine is smart and learned new skills independently and applied them to solve our business needs. She would be a great asset if she decides to come work for DSFederal after her graduation!”
Of his tutelage, Zen said, “He is a nice mentor. He constantly checks whether I have questions to make sure I understand everything.”
Her internship began on a part time basis in April, became full time in June, and will conclude in August.
Way to go, Katherine!
